Dead or Asleep

 “P”

“D”

Dead or Asleep
More often than not the male models when they pose flat on the stage end up looking dead in my sketches. It is as if I murdered them to achieve the affect. The female models, left to my hand, are more likely to be perceived as eventually waking up. Maybe yesterday if “P” had used a pillow or two for his pose, he might have lived?
The second sketch of “D” from earlier in the week (like the others of her I have recently posted in similar poses), show what a few pillows under a blanket can achieve. The added effort to keep her comfortable assures she will probably wake after finishing the sketch.
Both: 12”x 9” fountain pen and chalk on toned grey paper.

  2. Yes I see what you mean there is a certain rigidity to his form that speaks of death...but you leave room for uncertainty (well knowing of course he's alive) but after you look at the female's body you look again at the male and the uncertainty is real...dead or asleep in your art? Perfect title, I love that you can draw a body so perfectly...dear or alive :)

  3. She is so deeply asleep for a second when she wakes up nude in front of men and women will she instantly remember or try to cover herself immediately, waking up is such a lovely aloneness..I can't help but wonder how she'll react , I hope you tell me ;)

    1. I’m pretty sure her reaction, nude or covered, will be the same..

  4. Yes...I'm certain you are right...it is the pillows that make the difference!
She looks so comfy...whereas he is clearly very uncomfortable...even the very surfaces they are lying on seem to contrast immensely. Hers is soft and yielding, like a mattress...his more like granite...and that level of discomfort could so easily be mistaken for death!

I love how you achieve such differing effects with just a fountain pen and chalk - a sign of pure artistic genius...:)

    1. I have a feeling even if I made “P” more comfortable, he would act out being dead. He’s quite and actor. He can be very dramatic when modeling.
      Thank you

  5. Bonjour cher Anthony,

    Gros bisous♡

    1. I agree, there is a sense of abandonment in the males pose when compared to hers’. I do think the issues of death could have been avoided, if a pillow had been included in both poses.
      Thank you
