Tortured Face

Tortured Face

I do find it so much easier to show pain and suffering in the portrait of an older face. Maybe I search harder with those who have been here as long or longer than me? Maybe “R” in his poses acts out these emotions more?
A sketch from a session with “R” yesterday.
9”x 12” fountain pen, oil sanguine and chalk on toned paper

  1. Good questions...but it's hard in all meanings to find young face suffering...it'll be just sad...

    1. I agree. In youth the possibilities of better days to come. In old age, less so.. It will just get harder till the end.

  2. Tortured face I see often and they look quite a lot like he does, I use to help, I use to be able to. Now I barely can help myself, this speaks to me of Life more than anything else. Remarkable, Anthony

  3. It is good faces show the torture, for the kindness we hope will be offered. At some point even those fortunate enough to have been able to help will receive such kindness too..
    Thank you

  6. Oh...such a tragic face.
Yes, he has undoubtedly suffered...and it shows. But, then, hasn't everyone as they grow older...I guess accumulating years mean more experiences of both good and bad.
The best we can hope for is that we have more of the former!
A wonderfully expressive sketch, Anthony...I love it! :)

    1. I agree, the lines are there showing in old age. Now if “R” had smiled, we would have seen his lines in a whole different way. Smiling is so much harder to hold in a pose.
      Thank you
