A few days ago I took a long morning walk through a portion of Hyde Park. The sketch is of a gated path just north of the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens.

I had some time to paint today. This view is looking out toward Ludgate Circus from the entrance steps to St. Paul’s Cathedral, early in the afternoon.

Dream of Joy

Dream of Joy

I ended up going back to the Victoria and Albert Museum in the morning, remembering from a previous trip this sculpture with a veil over the figures head. It’s on an upper floor hidden within a collection of other things. The space around it on the floor had me sketching almost in the dark. What I sketched is the upper portion of this sculpture titled “The Sleep of Sorrow and the Dream of Joy” by Raffactte Monti from about 1861.

So I sketched the “Dream of Joy” portion. Below was another female figure sleeping down in the dark with me. I had planned on sketching the complete sculpture, but ended up not leaving enough space.. This has been happening often lately. Maybe it’s looking up at theses sculptures floating so high above my head?
