Of course I find myself off in the islands off solitude a lot lately too.

I was sketching today, lost in my islands, still. They were where I spent most my July Fourths in younger days.

I’m obviously sort of still there, on this lazy July days.

Okay, I was usually alone.

I did this sketch before the sketch I posted yesterday. This is closer in composition to a small painting I did in 2011 that placed in a gallery competition. It ended up being sold. I’ve included an image of the painting as well as the original concept sketch below.

Since I have been sketching umbrellas again, I thought I’d revisit and hopefully come up with a larger variation or two on the theme. I’ll get around to doing new painting, eventually.

This is a variation on a much earlier series, now being revisited. I was sketching legs. I was sketching umbrellas, today, still procrastinating, deciding what to paint.

I noticed them at the Victoria and Albert while taking photos of sculptures I thought I would practice sketching someday. Taken a few years ago, I still feel a little guilty about this photo I used as a reference for the sketch.
