To me, he seems to have stepped straight out of the nineteenth century...not sure if it's just the hat, or his entire apparel...but there is a distinct sense of the period. His expression is very enigmatic too...I can't quite interpret it...maybe wistfulness...or regret? Oh I love this! :))
He was in a period costume from a couple of centuries ago. His youth playing at being in the past, I think maybe, leads to such wistfulness… regrets? Thank you

It feels like the costume absorbed the heavy experience too, and it weights down him tremendously, so his attitude is very appropriate...
