1988

1988

On an early morning
in the summer of 88,
only my youngest
was truly awake
keeping us all up
through the night.

She just gave birth
a few days ago,
to her first child.
She’ll be awake
a lot now,
for quite a while.

On the porch of the old cottage at the Bay, when she was four.

6”x 9” ink and watercolor

  1. I can't see the full photo only right above the eye but I can imagine and I love what you wrote, my son was born in 1987 and woke up constantly first 9 months I was a zombie....no sleep ever by the time i finished feeding cleaning changing the diaper singing him to sleep, go back to bed, wait an hours and start all over again. Now my son is married is wife is expecting her due date Jan 2 and a daughter, gosh it's exciting for me too I could never buy those cute little pink dresses, now I can yay!

  5. I love this one Tony! How I wish we had a painter in the family to capture these moments. The verse is perfect...yes, having a child changes things up, wakes you up and keeps you up!

    1. Thank you.
The sketch is based on a favorite photo of my daughters and me when they were so young. My youngest recently giving birth to her first child, another grandchild for me (the ninth) reminded me of this image.
It would be great if more of these sort of moments were captured in some way.
