Theseus and Minotaur

Theseus and Minotaur

I spent another morning at the Victoria and Albert Museum sketching sculptures earlier this week. This sculpture is by Antonio Canova, finished in 1782. I need to sketch this again from another angle. The extended leg of Theseus is covering a cow’s head on the body below from this vantage point.
9”x 12” fountain pen and chalk on toned grey paper.

  1. Very well drawn good thing you mentioned the cow, position could be misinterpreted Great work as always

    1. Thank you
I’m not sure having a cows head makes it less weird.

  2. There is a certain tenderness playing out here between the victor and the subdued...I can feel it.
It is as if victory has failed to deliver the imagined feeling of power and superiority...instead there is a sense of sympathy in the pose...regret almost.
Yes...I'd like to see this from another vantage point too...with the cow's head in view...perhaps a new story would emerge...

Whatever the story...I love this! :)

    1. I was feeling the same.. I didn’t see victory. I saw regret..
I’ll do the other view of them the next time I visit the V&A.
      Thank you

  3. I see what you wrote in answer to Ygraine now I know what you're both seeing, strange how I'm not seeing that at all, my interpretation is so physical, but not in battle, so call me baffled, still love it

    1. I think a sketch from another vantage point will help.
